She did her PhD at the University of British Columbia, and arrived in Toronto after a postdoc at UC Davis. She\u2019s excited to find some local range edges to study. In her free time she enjoys baking elaborate cakes, watercoloring, and being bad at outdoor sports. Afkhami<\/b><br \/>\nMichelle joined the lab in September 2013, having snagged a prestigious EEB Departmental Post-Doc Fellowship. She finished her PhD at UC Davis with Sharon Strauss, and had completed a MSc at Rice University with Jenn Rudgers. She did her graduate work at Duke with <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.biology.duke.edu\/willislab\/\">John Willis<\/a>, and also worked closely with <a href=\"http:\/\/eeb.ku.edu\/sites\/eeb.ku.edu\/files\/files\/jkk\/index.html\">John Kelly<\/a> on QTL mapping in Mimulus. She was somewhat taken aback by being offerred a post-doc at the Evolution meetings even though had not yet applied for the position, but she quickly came to the conclusion that she shouldn't pass up the opportunity to work with the third John in a row. Our close collaboration with Stpehen Wright breaks this streak of great names, but we occasionally refer to him as \"John #4\" to keep the streak alive. She worked on the genetics of adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana. She has her <a href=\"https:\/\/billiegould.wordpress.com\/\">own website<\/a>, which is where we stole this picture. For her PhD, she worked on the ecological genetics of rapid evolution in sweet grass. Her post-doc work was on the genomics of flowering time differentiation in Arabidopsis. Katy's research interest include the ecology, genetics, and coevolution of mutualisms. Karen's research interest include the ecology, genetics, and evolution of range limits, as well as ecological genetics in <i>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/i>. Karen now <a href=\"http:\/\/people.upei.ca\/ksamis\/Home.html\">runs her own lab <\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upei.ca\/biology\/\">University of Prince Edward Island.<\/a>. He joined us for dumplings, coffee, and talking science. In a gesture of foolishness\/generosity, he recommended she contact Stephen Wright instead of recruiting her back into the lab. Despite not formally working with John, she's been his TA and we wrote a paper together with Stephen. We both appreciate good coffee.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-12\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Julia-Boyle.jpg\" alt=\"Julia-Boyle\" width=\"260\" height=\"330\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Julia Boyle<\/b><br \/>\nJulia just finished a PhD co-supervised by John and Megan Frederickson. She explored plant-microbe interactions and leaf microbiomes. Julia has a love for field work at Koffler Scientific Reserve and will begrudgingly respond to 'Boyle'. She has amazing coffee making skills, having worked previously as barrista. On a weekly basis, she had additional project ideas that would take 3 people 7 years of work to complete.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-14\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2019\/01\/Tia3.jpg\" alt=\"Tia\" width=\"260\" height=\"192\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Tia Harrison<\/b><br \/>\nTia did her MSc on the comparative population genetics in Medicago lupulina and its associated bacteria. She was a co-advised PhD student with John and Megan Frederickson studying rhizobia diversity across latitude and rates of evolution in rhizobia and legume genomes. Besides being an awesome PhD student and person, she is very good at teaching yoga. Some of Tia\u2019s greatest accomplishments include successfully defending her PhD and holding a headstand for one minute.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-15\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2016\/01\/Julia-Kreiner-catus.jpg\" alt=\"Julia-Kreiner-catus\" width=\"260\" height=\"390\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-204\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Julia Kreiner<\/b><br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"email\" href=\"mailto:julia.kreiner@botany.ubc.ca\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julia Kreiner<\/a> is co-advised by Stephen Wright. Her undergraduate work was with Brian Husband, on ploidy levels in the Brassicaceae family. She is interested in the population genomics of weed adaptation to agriculture. He's interested in understanding how different evolutionary forces shape the genome. Although he doesn't have any houseplants of his own, he's an enthusiastic plant researcher and loving foster parent to many carrots. Josh is currently working as a Clinical Research Project Assistant.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-17\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2017\/06\/Bonnie-1-e1497381962286.jpg\" alt=\"Bonnie\" width=\"260\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Bonnie Pikington<\/b><br \/>\nBonnie joined the lab after surviving John's tropical ecology course. Even after getting lost in the rainforest and almost having a tree fall on her, she signed up for more work in the lab! She did a really cool undergrad project on root knot nematodes, and has a really infectious laugh. She followed up on her undergrad work for her MSc and defended her thesis in 2020.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-18\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Priya.jpg\" alt=\"Priya\" width=\"260\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Priya Vaidya<\/b><br \/>\nPriya joined the Stinchcombe lab as an undergrad, and then worked at RMBL for a summer, getting that \u201cwork in a beautiful mountain setting\u201d sentiment out of her system. She returned back to the lab as an MSc student and defended her thesis on GxE in legume-rhizobia mutualisms. Priya is now working in the lab as the manager\/technician.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-19\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"http:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/stinchcombe\/files\/2015\/12\/brechann_lab_photo.jpg\" alt=\"brechann_lab_photo\" width=\"260\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Brechann McGoey<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:brechann.mcgoey@utoronto.ca\">Brechann<\/a> finished her Master's thesis in the lab, went out and worked in plant conservation, and came back for a PhD. She is broadly interested in evolutionary ecology, and specifically how evolutionary dynamics affect biological invasions. For her project, Brechann spent lots of time in the Marsh at <a href=\"http:\/\/ksr.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joker's Hill<\/a>, and became quite adept at dodging large spiders. She published some very cool papers in <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.biota.utoronto.ca\/stinchcombe\/?page_id=65#2009\">New Phytologist<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.biota.utoronto.ca\/stinchcombe\/?page_id=65#2010\">Evolution<\/a>, among others. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-20\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"http:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/stinchcombe\/files\/2019\/01\/Stefanie.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-544\"><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Stefanie Sultmanis<\/b><br \/>\nStefanie finished her the last year of her PhD in the lab, co-advised with Stephen Wright. Her thesis work was on gene expression evolution in C3-C4 plants, and she currently works for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Emily came to Toronto by way of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/Departments\/EEB\/schmitt\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annie Schmitt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~moylelab\/people.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonie Moyle<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faculty.ucr.edu\/%7Egupy\/Reznick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Reznick<\/a>, and is now carving out her own niche studying gene expression evolution. She is joint student between the Stinchcombe and Wright labs, and is working on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capsella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Capsella<\/i><\/a>, which looks a lot like one of John's favorite plants, Arabidopsis. Along the way, she studied how herbivory on Impatiens capensis changed depending on the severity of interspecific competition, costs of nodulation in Medicago, and multivariate clines in morning glory.For her MSc, she studied selective agents acting on flowering time. Rising Scholarship in field biology, which she used to defray the expenses of a 2-week field course in Peruvian Andes and lowland rainforest with John and <a href=\"http:\/\/labs.eeb.utoronto.ca\/frederickson\/\">Megan Frederickson<\/a>. For her research project, she tested whether two so-called species of morning glory are inter-fertile, or whether there are barriers to gene flow between them. She ignored John's requests for a web-safe photograph for most of her time in the lab, and is now applying to medical school. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-62\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/stinchcombe.eeb.utoronto.ca\/files\/2016\/01\/erin.jpg\" alt=\"erin\" width=\"150\" height=\"143\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-460\" \/><\/a><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>Erin Dann<\/b><br \/>\nErin's fourth year project examined whether Arabidopsis thaliana exhibits a latitudinal cline in photoperiod sensitivity, using chamber experiments with European accessions. She examined whether tortoise beetles have preferences for different leaf shapes of morning glory. Information about his breed can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Scotia_Duck_Tolling_Retriever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">  here<\/a> and  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20646119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a> . The middle initial 'D' stands for \"dog\" and was given by John's children, when they were 9 and 5 years old. He joined the Stinchcombe lab in August 2013. Sadly, cancer got the best of him in 2023. His interests included fetching, sleeping, squeaking his fuzzy man, and eating sticks. He is a replacement for the late Buster I, a fish that Emily rescued after his life as animal behavior project subject was over. So far as we can tell, Buster II had no personality. Every time he saw the fake plant in his tank, he had a look on his face of \"OH COOL! A PLANT!\" and then 30 seconds later he had the look of \"OH COOL!
